April 2017

Earlier this month, Instagram announced that over 200 million of its 700 million users are using Instagram Stories every day, up from 150 million in January. This means that more people are using Instagram Stories than Snap (formerly known as Snapchat) Stories, which last reported 158 million daily users in February. Congrats to superstar client Nourished World on wrapping up their first Supercharge with Superfoods: A 21 day Holistic Healthy Living Challenge. Over 44 people from around the country (and even internationally!) joined this virtual challenge, which covered physical, mental and emotional well-being. Co-owner Sarah Birney kept participants motivated to integrate superfoods into their daily meals through a fantastic use of Facebook Live videos every day, where she gave sage health coaching advice and outlined a daily challenge – from self-care to healthy eating, exercise to creating organized physical space, limiting beliefs, affirmations, and more!

On Oct. 27, Twitter announced it's shutting down the video-sharing service Vine "in the coming months." Vine allows users to share 6-second video clips. With prominent platforms such as Instagram and Snapchat allowing users to post videos and Stories, Vine failed to protect itself from competitors. Clients, long-time supporters, the business community, and new building neighbors joined us this month as we celebrated our new #TeamMoonsail HQ with a ribbon cutting hosted by the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce. It was a packed day, thanks to the official ribbon cutting, our social media themed photo booth, and the introduction of the newest -- and smallest -- member of #TeamMoonsail. Being community-focused is one of our company's core values, and we want to thank everyone who came out to celebrate with us! Twitter’s big changes have begun. This month, Twitter began rolling out four key updates by introducing the ability to retweet and quote tweet yourself. The changes, which are explained in-depth in our blog post, tweak the 140-character limit and aim to make the platform more functional and user-friendly.

One of the many challenges — and opportunities too — of working in digital communications and the social media space is keeping up with trends. While the fundamentals of best storytelling practices don’t change, the distribution platforms we increasingly rely on do. Not only do they change, but they change quickly.

Social Media Examiner — an excellent resource for keeping up with the latest in digital media news — recently released its 2016 Social Media Marketing Industry Report. The report surveyed more than 5,000 digital marketers on how they are currently using social media to meet their goals, and how their plans may change in the future.

Since we spend a lot of time playing in the digital sandbox, we’re not surprised to see our strategies and tactics line up pretty well with the report’s findings.
